Large unusual Spratling silver and Amethyst brooch/necklace
This is an amazing Spratling brooch and necklace. The piece can be worn as either a pin or necklace. The chain is very heavy twisted sterling. It is stamped Sterling on the jump ring. The brooch/pendant is beautiful, with Amethyst cabachons. There are 10 smaller natural Amethysts, and one large center stone. All the stones have natural inclusions. This looks like an Aztec sun to me. The large pendant/brooch tested with acids to be above sterling, possibly 940 silver. The brooch/pendant measures 2 7/8″ round. The chain is 21″ long. The chain could be removed if desired by any jeweler that works in vintage silver. The chain may or may not be original to the piece. The Amethyst stones are a rich purple color, with no cracks. There is one tiny rough spot on one small Amethyst, that I can feel. I try to disclose everything. Hallmarks include, ” Spratling Made in Mexico, Spratling silver. Safety clasp works fine, and the design is timeless. Weight is 96.5 grms. I would date this fine piece at c1950′s.
